Leadership North Texas presented by Chesapeake Energy Aims to Build Regional Stewards
The North Texas Commission opened the application period for the 2012-2013 class of Leadership North Texas presented by Chesapeake Energy Corp. Leadership North Texas is a graduate-level, regional leadership program designed to recruit, develop and support leaders who have a commitment to civic engagement and to the North Texas region. Participants hear from regional and national experts on various issues facing North Texas with discussion on how to address the challenges unique to our region.
The program, now in its third year, has educated nearly 90 individuals, including four mayors, six city council members, a Texas State Representative, representatives from the region's higher education institutions, five city managers, business executives and non-profit leaders. Over a nine-month period, the class addresses and discusses topics such as the history of North Texas, regionalism, our economy, workforce and education, sustainable development, state government and a plan for civic engagement. They learn best practices in regional stewardship from experts and other regions, and explore how to collaborate to best address current regional issues.
Leadership North Texas offers the Dan S. Petty Regional Steward scholarship to provide tuition assistance for up to three non-profit executives from North Texas. The scholarship is named for the organization's former President and CEO who passed away in January 2011.
"Leadership North Texas has become incredibly instrumental in creating regional advocates and fostering collaboration in the three years since it began," said Mabrie Jackson, President and CEO of the North Texas Commission. "We need strong leaders who understand the dynamics of our region. Leadership North Texas provides community investors an opportunity to work with their peers across the area to address the challenges we face."
